Dozens of neighbors and demonstrators camped in Puerta del Sol moved this Tuesday to Navas de Tolosa Street, located between Sol and Gran Vía, to halt the eviction of a woman and her family, which was finally postponed to next October 14 after the police left the portal.
According to the Tenants' Union and members of other associations, members of the camping organization, which has been set up in Sol for three nights in protest against the housing crisis, announced by loudspeaker the imminent eviction attempt and asked demonstrators to move to number 5 on that street. According to the same sources, the judicial commission has postponed the eviction for October 14.
According to 20minutos, those gathered in Puerta del Sol moved to the street near Callao, where National Police officers were guarding the property. According to RTVE, also reported by 20minutos, participants in the camp for Maricarmen and the right to housing, which had been set up in Sol since last Saturday, had been warned that the eviction would take place and moved to the property to show support for the affected people.
According to RTVE, reported by 20minutos, the activists’ pressure caused the eviction to be postponed to next October 14 at 9:30 a.m. According to El País, reported by 20minutos, the eviction was aimed at an elderly woman who lived with her family.
According to elDiario.es, the mobilization is part of the so‑called ‘Maricarmen effect’, which has managed to shield more people in similar situations even before the law stops some evictions, and this Tuesday allowed saving another neighbor from an eviction alongside the Sol camp.
According to 20minutos, the activists chanted the slogan “Madrid will be the tomb of fascism” when the tenant of the building came out onto the balcony to thank the support.
